On a holiday, children enjoy ending the day with a sweet treat, and St. Patrick's Day is no different. Parents can surprise children with a special treat that is created with the holiday in mind. Desserts made with a rainbow theme or to look like a pot of gold are appropriate for St. Patrick's Day, and of course, anything green is perfect.
Green Desserts for St. Patrick's Day
Green food coloring is always useful on St. Patrick's Day and it can be used to make traditional desserts more festive to celebrate March 17th. Tint icing green to top cakes, cupcakes, or cookies for a simple dessert.
Kids will enjoy ice cream sundaes using green mint chocolate chip ice cream. Allow children to top the ice cream with some favorite sauces or toppings, and then finish the sundaes with some whipped cream that has been turned green with food coloring.
Another green ice cream dessert can be made using vanilla ice cream, milk, green food coloring, and a few drops of mint extract. Combine all of these things in a blender and enjoy a delicious green mint milkshake.
Rainbow Treats
St. Patrick's Day is all about leprechauns, and the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. Children will be surprised by colorful rainbow desserts. According to Family Fun in "Taste a Rainbow" parents can use a vanilla boxed cake mix and divide the batter into six equal portions. Use food coloring to tint the portions red, yellow, orange, green, blue, and purple. Then layer the colors in cupcake liners, bake according to the directions, and the result will be a perfect rainbow cupcake.
Parents can also make a rainbow dessert using gelatin. Acquire many different flavors of gelatin in the colors of the rainbow. Make one at a time, pouring a layer in small individual glasses. After a layer has set, another layer can be made and poured on top. Continue the process until the rainbow is finished.
A Pot of Gold Dessert
Around St. Patrick's Day parents can find chocolate wrapped in gold paper to look like coins. Hide coins throughout the house, give children a small bowl, and let children search for the coins to make their own pot of gold.
Another way to make a pot of gold uses lemon-flavored gelatin. Make the gelatin according to the "jigglers" recipe on the box and when it is firm, cut the gelatin into small circles. Place the circles in a small bowl to create a pot of gold dessert.
Whether a family has just a few moments or the entire evening to create a St. Patrick's Day dessert, children will enjoy the process of making and eating it. Create something green or rainbow colored for a sweet treat at the end of this Irish holiday.
