The winter olympics are upon us and many sit and watch the events, but this year why not host a party to celebrate the Winter Games and participate in some fun events!

February 12, 2010 will be the start of the Winter Olympics in Vancouver, and the events will continue until the 28th. Everyone has their favorite events during the Winter Olympics, whether it be speed skating, ice dancing or ski-jumping. And since its parked in the middle of winter, why not beat the mid-winter blues and invite some people over to play, instead of just watch? A Winter Olympics event can be fun and memorable!

Find Your Best Event

Families who have video game systems can buy or rent games that feature the winter sports that you see in the Vancouver Winter Olympics. Have guests sign up for their favorite event and let the games begin! Have a tournament to find out who's the champion at ski-jumping, figure skating, or bobsledding. All the fun, without any of the training or pain!

Other Olympic Events

Those not competing in the video games can compete in other ways. Set up events and find the winner at events such as:

  • Hula-hooping
  • Cookie stacking
  • Push-ups or sit-ups
  • Snow sculpting contest (or sand if you're in a more temperate climate)

Ideas for an Olympic Party are endless. Invite guests to come dressed in costume as an athlete of their favorite event, or adapt games to an Olympic theme. One example is to play picture charades where guests would guess the Olympic events.

The Medal Ceremony

Just like in the actual Winter Olympics, build a simple platform and have a ceremony to announce the winners of each event. Local dollar stores carry mock medals and ribbons, which the master of ceremonies can place over their head. Flowers can also be handed to the winners .

Cheer on Your Country's Team with Color-Coordinated Food

No party is complete without food, and hosts can create a buffet in thematic colors! For instance, if you are supporting Team USA have a Belgian Waffle bar and include whipped cream, strawberries, and blueberries to decorate your waffle. The Jello cake many have seen around the 4th of July would work great for dessert, or set up an ice cream sundae bar where red, white, and blue sprinkles, along with other festive toppings are available.

If the team of choice is Germany, whose colors are red, white, and green then you could have a salad bar containing broccoli, cucumbers, green peppers, red peppers, tomatoes, and cauliflower. Cupcakes can easily be iced in several different colors and pushed together puzzle-like to create a certain country's flag.

Olympic Park Transformation

Just like the festive atmosphere in the Olympic Park, part of making a party festive is the atmosphere. Balloons, streamers, paper products, and confetti in the colors of ones favorite country can make a party fun. Burn a CD with patriotic music, and of course include the National Anthem for your medal ceremony.
